As I sit at the kitchen table, laptop open, finishing up work on an annual report, I looked up to find my son sitting quietly on the kitchen floor. He’s two and a half, anytime he gets quiet, he has my full attention. Rather than doing something naughty, like the time he figured out how to open the dresser drawers and started dragging every single article of clothing I own out into the living room, he was sitting down with tiny plastic cones (like the kind used to direct you away from road construction) and two cards. When asked what he was doing, Mr. C simply looked up and said “I’m playing Bakugan.” Stunned, I could only reply with an “oh really?”

WTF?

What the hell is a Bakugan?

Apparently, I’m too old and too out of touch to know what my own son was mimicking so well. My only option was to google it. Bakugan: Battle Monsters is another anime/card game to come out of Japan. Great, I thought, my kid is already subscribing to the latest toy trend… But that didn’t really explain how he seemed to know exactly what to do with the toys.

The way he sat so patiently, placing the cones on specific spots on the cards, I knew that this wasn’t some random game of his. He’d seen this somewhere. Then I remembered something from his cousin’s birthday party, way back in the beginning of June. They (Mr. C’s cousins) were playing Bakugan. They had cards that looked awfully similar to Pokemon cards and the round little plastic balls that were placed on certain cards.

As the light bulb came on, I realized that C remembered the game and now he was playing his own little version of it. Beyond simply being impressive, it begs the question: is this normal for a two year old?

Then, before I could declare the boy a genius, he plops a plastic purple bird down on the table and announces “I have a green birdie!”

Asa Sunt Fetele

Asa Sunt Fetele is a wonderful short film about a boy’s study of women. The plot reminds me of A Christmas Story. Instead of a little blond boy named Ralphie, you have a little blond boy named Mathias. In this film Mathias’ teacher assigns a composition. Is this starting to sound familiar yet? The instructions are simple; write about anything you’d like as long as you learn something from it. Okay, so little Mathias won’t be chronicling his deepest Christmas wishes, but he goes at the composition with the same vigor. You follow Mattias through his studies until you happen upon another young classmate, Maria. It quickly becomes clear that Mattias is quite taken by the lovely blonde and they have a couple of minor exchanges before his research is complete. While I won’t give away the end of Asa Sunt Fetele, I will tell you that it shares another parallel with A Christmas Story – it ends much like the scene in which Ralphie receives his grade.

Me putting any effort into blogging about a song or a particular artist is a rarity. Me blogging about two albums in one post: super-ultra-mega rare. So heads up, kiddos, time to pay attention and get your mouse clicking fingers ready. These are two releases that you don’t want to miss.

You can always judge an album by how often it’s rotated into your playlists, am I right? Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and Manners seem to have taken over my iPod. Upbeat, cleaver and just plain catchy, even my toddler can’t resist singing along in the car.

Livejournal, you’ve been great. We had a good run back there, didn’t we? Sure we did, but I think I out grew you at some point. So, it isn’t you, it’s me.

When one door shuts, another one opens. Welcome to my new blog on WordPress.com. I’ll never completely shutdown the LJ blog, I will be moving all future blogs to this site and simply leaving a link over there.

This is a terrible introduction, I realize this, but right now I have a two year old begging for attention. I’m sure I could shoo him off to finish a proper post, but that would only accomplish one thing and that wouldn’t be a decent blog entry.

So, I’m off to tend to the monster at my heels.
